This course explores the educational practices and structures needed to create culturally responsive and equitable classrooms. Through readings, videos, podcasts, and social media posts about race, gender, age, religion, sexual orientation and disabilities, students will further realize the effects these practices have on underrepresented populations in education. Through their own awareness, reflection and research, students will learn how to respond, monitor, and track the impact on their students and school communities in order to foster opportunity and equity for all students.
Course Goals:
Course Objectives:
Students will summarize findings and identify action steps to support culturally responsive practices. Students will be expected to engage and consult with each other through their own educational experience. Students will be able to describe what a culturally responsive educator/school looks, sounds, and feels like through their own self-reflection, case-studies, readings and research. Students will also identify and subscribe (through list serves, social media, etc.) to relevant organizations that foster and promote cultural proficiency and equitable practices.
