Course Description

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of American Sign Language (ASL), focuses on building receptive and expressive skills through a visual-gestural modality, and provides an overview of Deaf culture.

This course is offered at the graduate and undergraduate level. Undergraduates will be expected to participate fully in discussions, activities, and assignments and the instructor will differentiate certain outcomes and expectations when necessary.

Course Goals & Objectives

At the end of this course, the students will able to:

1. Vocabulary Development
2. Demonstrate smooth fingerspelling and number production
3. Demonstrate comprehensive mastery of targeted vocabulary words drawn from class, lectures, and videos.
4.  Produce and read vocabulary signs using correct hand shape, palm orientation, location, movement, and non manual markers (NMM)
5. Grammatical Features
6. Demonstrate comprehensive mastery of target, content-specific commands, questions, and statements in ASL.
7. Identify grammatical features within short dialogues in ASL as directed by the professor.
8. Conversational and Communication Skills
9. Demonstrate comprehension and conversation facilitating behaviors.
10. Demonstrate comprehension and production of regulating behaviors (i.e. attention getting techniques, turn taking signals, and others)
11. Comprehend short narratives and stories in ASL as signed by the professor, Deaf users of ASL, or viewed on ASL videos.
12. Demonstrate the ability to create, conduct and terminate a short content-specific conversation.
13. Cultural Awareness
14. Analyze and critique competing perspectives of diverse Deaf communities in the United States, ideas, aesthetic traditions, and cultural practices, and its history.
15. Compare, contrast, and interpret differences and commonalities among Deaf and hearing cultures.

Lectures will include demonstration of grammar and syntax in ASL with every new topic. New vocabulary will be given in every class. Also regional signs and the importance of flexibility will be discussed.
