Climate Resiliency Fellowship, McAllister & Ostensen, Summer 2019

Note: Individuals and teams of 2-4 teachers can apply through the Climate Resiliency Fellowship page of the Shelburne Farms website. Each participant completes their own application.  On the application please indicate that you are interested in receiving credit through Castleton University.  You will be notified by Shelburne Farms of your acceptance and will receive links and information to register for the program and to register for the course credits.  Payment of $500 for optional credits and $500 for the team participation fee (scholarships available) will be due to Shelburne Farms.   

Course Description

The Climate Resiliency Fellowship is a year-long professional learning opportunity for educators committed to learning and teaching about climate change through interdisciplinary and place-based approaches. Educators apply to attend as school teams of 2-4 educators and work together to design and implement interdisciplinary climate change education and service learning projects back at school.

Teams work together to create authentic service learning projects that are shaped by youth interest and voice. During our seasonal sessions and check-ins we use new lenses to explore climate change education through arts integration, STEM learning, and solutions-based approaches. Educator teams are supported throughout the year by the network of educators, program facilitators, and regional partners. This program kicks off July 15-17 2019, meets again in November 2019, has a virtual meeting in January 2020, and culminates with a one day gathering and celebration in 2020.

Audience: The Fellowship is primarily suited for educators working with students in grades 6-12.

Course Objectives

Course Goals:

• Build content knowledge, pedagogy practice, and collaboration for interdisciplinary climate change education in schools across Northern New England.
• Develop a community of learners that supports, sustains, and advances the practices and pedagogies of climate change education.

 Course Objectives:

• Plan and implement a climate action-focused service learning project involving student voice.
• Participate in seasonal, in-person, and virtual gatherings held throughout 2019-2020.
• Present a climate action-focused service learning project.
