Confronting Social Inequalities, Berolzheimer, Fall 2019

Course Description

This course, comprised of after-school workshops and related evening programs, is designed to help teachers inspire their students to think critically, connect across difference, and take action in their community. The course connects with First Wednesday programs with those objectives sponsored by the Vermont Humanities Council. The after-school workshops, on a range of issues highlighting social inequalities, include a book discussion and a classroom activity. Following the workshop teachers will attend the aligned First Wednesday program that further illuminates the workshop topic. Teachers must attend two of the three different dates and programs.

Course Objectives/Goals

• Be able to discuss issues of social inequality with confidence, and effectively conduct such conversations with students.
• Develop teaching strategies to help students understand the roots and realities of contemporary social inequalities.
• Develop teaching strategies to help students understand civic responsibility and take action in their communities.

Required Texts

Students will be required to read the book that will be discussed at the after-school workshop. Students will also be required to write a reflection, summarizing what they learned in the course and stating their goals for applying that learning to their classroom. (Refer to course syllabus).
