Course Description

This course focuses on a range of oral/written connections that impact literacy. It will enable participants to understand normal language development and the relationship between oral and written language in light of individual, cultural and contextual influences in order to use that knowledge to develop case studies and plan instruction.

Course Objectives:

To be able to identify a child’s oral language development, strengths and challenges
To be able to describe how oral and written language are connected
To be able to identify individual differences in children
To be able to identify cultural and contextual factors influencing the development and growth of language/literacy skills.
To be able to use the knowledge gained to develop case studies
To use case study knowledge to plan instruction

Language and Literacy Development: What Teachers Need to Know by James P Brynes and Barbara A. Wasik, Guildford Press, 2019 This should be pre-ordered as it will not be available until July 2019. Needed for Classes on Days 7-11.
