Course Description

The implementation of flexible pathways in schools around the country and specifically in Vermont clarify the importance of having a plan for learning and a place to store evidence of learning gathered flexibly. This is the philosophy behind the requirement of a Personalized Learning Plan for each Vermont High School graduate. However, we continue to struggle with making this process of designing a PLP authentic and relevant for students. This class will explore the philosophical and pedagogical reasoning behind PLPs and course participants will apply that knowledge and understanding to the creation of a Professional PLP through which they will explore how a PLP becomes relevant and authentic to them and how they can make it relevant and authentic for their students.

Understand the pedagogical importance of an authentic Personalized Learning Plan
Apply that pedagogical understanding to the development of professional PLP
Build implementation of an authentic PLP experience for students into their professional PLP.

Course Objectives:

Understand the requirements from the state on Flexible Pathways and PLP
Identify the reasons for and challenges to implementation of authentic PLPs, especially in light of the circumstances of remote learning.
Design Professional PLPs that meet the criteria of the state PLP
Reflect on the design process to identify solutions to some of the challenges of authentic PLP work in schools.
Apply knowledge gained through reflection to design an authentic PLP experience for students at a school and course level.
