This course begins with an introduction to the Jump$tart Financial Literacy standards adopted by Vermont in January, 2018, and follows a trajectory of coherence across the K-8 Common Core Math Standards and the Standards of Math Practice. Course participants will read the research behind the national financial literacy standards, study the appropriate progression documents from the University of Arizona alongside current curricula materials, learn strategies for instruction and assessment of the state adopted financial literacy standards, and complete the course through a final project reflective of new learning and demonstrating understanding of the FLS and their connections to the CCSSM.
Audience: classroom teachers, math specialists, and special educators who teach math k-12; high school special educators who teach math
The National Financial Literacy Standards are compartmentalized into 6 divisions. This course will examine 3 of those divisions
And thru the Vermont-Adopted National Standards Crosswalk, the Draft K-8 Progressions (University of Arizona), and the Common Core State Standards for math

Option 1 Design a standards based unit plan. Identify: math and FL standards; Tier 1 instructional strategies; formative and summative assessments that are reflective of standards based grading; and a plan to meet tier 2 needs. Your work is to include citations from a minimum of 3 research articles or professional writings.
Option 2 Create a coherence map, document and visual, of the Financial Literacy Standards and their CCSSM counterparts. Tag each standard with prerequisites, cross curricula opportunities, suggestions for extensions. Your work is to include citations from a minimum of 3 research articles or professional writings.
Option 3 Do you have an original idea? You may propose a self-directed final project. The expectation is that time, rigor, demonstration of new knowledge/depth of knowledge will parallel options 1 and 2. You will need to present your idea to me by July 29, 2020.
Evaluation: Participation in all synchronous meetings, completion of asynchronous assignments, fulfills online postings; complete all journal reflections, and a final project.
