Understanding strategies and order for Fractional Reasoning, LaCroix & Gingras, Summer 2019

Course Description

This course will focus primarily on fractional reasoning. The use of routines and mathematical language in the elementary grades, while focusing on the  development of tools, strategies and curriculum to best reach all students at the elementary school level.  Each day there will be elementary school topics which will be focused on.  Participants will learn about patterns and routines to introduce topics and how patterns and techniques learned in Elementary Grades Math Lab can be used to enhance the learning outcomes of students.

Course Goals & Objectives

To provide teachers with strategies on how to create lesson plans to teach a unit on fractional reasoning using concrete models, pictorial models and abstract models.

Course Objectives: Students will be able to recognize the ways of knowing in teaching a given unit in the area of fractional  reasoning and create lessons  using the strategies and the structure of a math class that have been taught in this 2 day workshop.

Assignments:

• Students will collaborate with others to create a lesson using the strategies and techniques demonstrated in the coursework and then present the lesson on day 2.
• Course readings and conversations around the concepts of Fractional reasoning.
• Students will work on developing through the progressions from Kindergarten through 5th grade. Strategies for teaching addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division will be shown and progressed through topics covered in the elementary grades.
• Students taking the course for credit will be asked to do an additional writing assignment about the necessity of both conceptual and procedural understanding of mathematics and how to implement into an inclusive classroom.
