Course Description

Balanced Literacy: The MAX Teaching Approach

This workshop will, through active participation and modeling, provide teachers with a framework of instruction and many different research-proven classroom activities that help students become strategic users of reading and writing for the purpose of learning. The activities motivate students to enthusiastically interpret text through purposeful reading, cooperative construction of meaning and thoughtful reflection for lasting understanding of subject matter.

Course Objectives

Course Goals:  

 Goal #1: Participants will recognize that students must be explicitly taught how to use reading and writing to learn.

Goal #2: Participants will extend their knowledge and skills of effective comprehension instruction into content area reading and writing, including effective study, time management, test-taking strategies, and effective use of technology resources.

Goal #3: Participants will demonstrate their ability to plan and assess engaging units that are aligned with state and local standards and that engage students in authentic literacy tasks, including student choice, differentiated instruction, and both text and technology materials at a variety of levels.

Course Objectives:

 By the end of this course, students will:

1. Learn a variety of research-based content-area literacy strategies to be used in any subject area and/or grade level.
2. Plan and create literacy-based lessons to be implemented during school year.

   4. One Magic Square
   5. One Concept Check
   6. One 1 to 18 Writing Prompt
3. Read several articles using the literacy strategies taught in class allowing for reflection and individual professional development.
