Course Description

This course of study will include a selection of topics in academic disciplines based on the needs and interests of the participants. It is intended for students and administrators seeking continuing study and elementary, middle school and high school educators seeking advanced study in content areas.

Through seminars, workshops, readings, and fieldwork, participants will explore the environment and history of selected sites:

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio
Motown Museum in Detroit, Michigan
Country Music Hall of Fame
Studio B
Ryman Auditorium
Selected downtown sites related to the Civil Rights Movement in Nashville, Tennessee
Graceland
Sun Studios
Rock & Soul Museum
Stax Studio
Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee
Muscle Shoals Studio
FAME Studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama

Participants will work daily to produce and develop integrated and differentiated based lessons, complete with assessment products and proficiencies for implementation in classrooms. This course is designed to be adaptable for all grade levels and content areas and for veteran and aspiring teachers and administrators.

The lesson plans will be based upon an instruction received in the United States and will be wholly reproducible as digital resources made available for Castleton University and the public domain.

Graceland, Sun Studios, Rock & Soul Museum, Stax Studio, Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee
Muscle Shoals Studio, FAME Studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.

Participants will develop integrated lessons to be shared and used as curriculum.

Course Goals & Objectives

Course Goals:

• Develop new and integrated curriculum
• Improve instruction
• Learn about the music culture of the United States through the historical period of 20th century America

Course Expectations

• Attend all site visits affiliated with the course
• Successful completion of all pre-trip assignments
• Schedule will be provided
• Assessment requirements will be emailed/shared via Google Docs
• Music & History examines historical events through motion pictures, film segments, and music with emphasis on their historical background, social, political, and economic contexts.
• Course Learning Goals/Objectives/Competencies:

After taking this course, you will have an improved ability to:

1. Analyze how the business of music has shaped and impacted history
2. Reflect on the methods and context that musicians and filmmakers have used to reflect upon and/or shape history.
3. Recognize himself or herself as a historical subject whose viewing experiences are contextually influenced by music.

• Objective. What is the goal of your presentation? How does an understanding of the music you have chosen allow you to recognize yourself as a historical subject whose viewing experiences are influenced by film and

• Participate in seminars, workshops, field experiences and discussions in the United States
• Develop new curriculum/programs or a series of lessons to be integrated into the school district’s curriculum
• All work completed is for the public domain
• A general reflection at the end of the course (2 examples below).
• ALL final projects will be shared with holiday@wsesu.org by August 10, 2019
