Online Teaching with Practicum, Parah, Summer 2019

Course Description

This course will allow participants to practice and master the skills they have learned in both Methods classes by using them. Participants will be paired with a cooperating teacher licensed and working online in the area of the participant's endorsement. Participants will prepare, initiate, and deploy online learning for students. Participants will provide online instruction to a diverse population of online students. Participants will provide support and feedback to online students. Participants will deploy assessments and use them to assess student learning and academic honesty, develop appropriate feedback to students that supports improvement of student performance and mastery, and helps inform future instruction. Participants reflect upon their experience and review feedback from their Cooperating Teaching to help improve their practice.

Audience: This course is open to all licensed educators and to students enrolled and in good standing in an educator preparation program for initial licensure. All participants must have successfully passed a background check and not be listed in the Vermont Adult Abuse Registry or the Vermont Child Protection Registry before they can begin the course. Participants must have completed Methods I and Methods II in preparation for the Online Teaching Specialist (OTS) endorsement, or demonstrated proficiency in the Course Objectives for those courses.

Course Goals

Under the supervision of an experienced online educator in the teacher’s content area, teacher candidates will be provided opportunities to practice their skills in an online course and lead class discussions, facilitate lessons, and provide assessment feedback.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, successful participants will have demonstrated proficiency in: 

• Using a range of relevant technologies that support student learning and engagement. 
• Creating a personalized learning environment for students, adapting curriculum and instruction as necessary for a diversity of students, and providing accommodations as necessary. 
• Organizing materials, instruction, and procedures to meet standards--based learning goals. 
• Providing effective and clear expectations, communication, and feedback. 
• Creates and implements assessments to measure student learning and ensure academic integrity. 
• Modeling and managing safe, legal and ethical online behavior. 
• Modeling collaborative knowledge construction and reflection by working with a cooperating teacher

Course Expectation

Assignments: 

In order to successfully complete this course, participants must meet the following requirements: 

1. In consultation with their Cooperating Teaching, participants must review a unit of online instruction in the Cooperating Teacher’s class. They must decide whether they need to make any changes or additions, for example to accommodate students with special needs, and implement those changes if necessary. 
2. Participants must implement the unit of instruction, using best practices, to deliver online instruction to everyone enrolled in the class. 
3. Participants must communicate clearly with students, giving them clear expectations and timely and useful feedback and support. 
4. Participants must evaluate existing assessment in their unit, making changes or additions if necessary. 
5. Participants must implement the assessments, and use the data from the assessment to determine if students have achieved the standard. If not, participants should suggest supplemental instruction to help assist students in mastering the material. 
6. Participants must complete a reflection paper at the end of the course. 
7. During this process, participants must demonstrate proficiency in each of the Course Objectives, as evidenced in the mid--class and final evaluations.

Projects:

Participants will create a portfolio of work demonstrating their proficiency in each of the online teaching standards.

Evaluation:

Participants are expected to complete all assignments with a grade of 80 or better. Each assignment has a rubric explaining what is required to earn a passing grade.

Grading:

All assignments will be graded according to the assignment rubric.
