Course Description

This interactive course is designed for the Orton-Gillingham (OG) educator who already has a basic understanding of the structure of the English languages and wishes to learn more about the neuroscience of reading and research-based strategies beyond the basic OG lesson plan. Participants will leave with an in-depth understanding of phonological awareness, phonology, reading and spelling development, reading fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and grammar. Participants will leave with practical strategies they can immediately implement with their students. This course is available for 3 graduate credits. Teachers working toward their Orton-Gillingham Certified Level will obtain 37 coursework hours.

Note: Participants seeking Orton-Gillingham Certified Level training should already be certified at the Associate level by the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators. Please speak with the instructor with questions about OG Certified Level training.

Course Objectives

Participants will learn how to:

• Describe the neurological hallmarks of typical and atypical reading
• Target phonological awareness and its role in reading acquisition
• Use phonology to better understand students' reading and spelling errors
• Use different stage models for reading and spelling development to analyze student performance and guide instruction
• Build reading fluency
•  Explain grammar and a multisensory approach to grammar instruction
• Create interactive activities for robust vocabulary instruction
• Understand the role of Executive Function when teaching reading comprehension
• Become a more critical consumer of educational claims and dispel common neuromyths

If you are taking the class for graduate credit, you need to purchase “Expert Perspectives on Interventions for Reading” by Moats, Dakin, & Joshi ($23 from International Dyslexia Association's website https://dyslexiaida.org/product/expert-perspectives-on-interventions-for-reading/ ) All other assigned readings and videos are available online
