Say What? This is a course designed to develop activities and lessons for K-6 teachers (session 1) or 7-12 teachers (session 2) to help their students organize information and speak with confidence in a variety of classroom and life situations. Designed to address the English Language Arts Standards Identified below, the instructor will facilitate designing activities, protocols and projects that develop the communication skills of each student.
Audience: Session One: K-6, Session Two: 7-12
Common Core Speaking Standards K-6
Build on others' talk in conversations by responding to the comments of others through multiple exchanges.
Describe people, places, things, and events with relevant details, expressing ideas and feelings clearly.
Report on a topic or text, tell a story, or recount an experience in an organized manner, using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace.
Adapt speech to a variety of contexts and tasks, demonstrating command of formal English when indicated or appropriate. (See grade 6 Language standards 1 and 3 for specific expectations.)
Session Two: Speaking Standards ( 7-12)
Analyze the main ideas and supporting details presented in diverse media and formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively, orally) and explain how the ideas clarify a topic, text, or issue under study.
Delineate a speaker's argument and specific claims, evaluating the soundness of the reasoning and the relevance and sufficiency of the evidence.
