Vermont teachers are exploring many different educational initiatives: Flexible Pathways/Personal Learning Plans (Act 77), Proficiency Based Instruction, International Baccalaureate, Differentiated Instruction, Responsive Classrooms, the Common Core, and Writing across the Curriculum. Regardless of which of these initiatives drives your district, The Text of Self and Nonfiction Reading and Writing cuts across and embraces all educational endeavors. Derived from the premise that the “text of self” is central to literacy, this course offers participants the opportunity to explore this truth as writers, readers, and teachers. Participants will engage in a wide variety of activities, and at the end of the five-day course, have a collection of their own work and a variety of reading, writing, and language strategies to use with their students. (Course applicable to teachers grades 3-12, including Special Ed and ELL)
• To understand all reading and writing begins with “self’
• To provide a student-centered approach to literacy
• To make connections between the course and their district’s initiatives
These texts ARE included in the course fee.
