Vermont schools are encouraging conversations about social justice, equity, and inclusion. To start these conversations, the curriculum must welcome and include each student. The Text-of-Self places students, their stories, and experiences at the heart of the curriculum.
In this week-long course, teachers will practice this “way” of teaching through their own writing and reading. During the week, they will create a portfolio of activities and models (creative nonfiction, poetry, and prose) to use in their classrooms. This course is appropriate for teachers of grades 3-12 (including Special Ed and grade-level teams) whose district’s initiatives might include: Proficiency Based Instruction and Grading; International Baccalaureate; Personal Learning Plans; Responsive Classrooms; and Differentiated Instruction.
How the Stars Fell into the Sky: A Navajo Legend; Winnie: The True Story of the Bear who Inspired Winnie the Pooh by Lindsay Mattick; The US Constitution; Witness by Karen Hesse, Letting Swift River Go by Jane Yolen, and excerpts from: Looking Back by Loise Lowry, Knucklehead by Jon Scieszka, and selected poems, music, art, and film.
The course cost includes books and a binder of materials.
