Course Description:

Next Generation students and the new Vermont Multi-tiered Systems of Support encourage teachers to rethink the approaches they use on a daily basis to engage all students in high levels of learning. Update your classroom instruction with a deeper understanding Universal Design for Learning and the Innovator’s Mindset.  Paired together its potential for increasing engagement, equity, and success students in elementary students.

Participants will design innovative brain compatible learning experiences resulting in a class action plan to redesign an aspect of learning in their classroom to meet the needs of all learners.  Teachers will also reflect on their learning from this to integrate their thinking on how distance learning for students could be improved using these ideas.

Audience: K-5 Teachers, Administrators, and Curriculum Coordinators

Course Goals:

Educators will learn why multiple means of engagement, representation, and action/expression are important to offer next generation learners

Educators will learn how we can use an innovator’s mindset to create empowered learning experiences for our students

Educators will examine what they can innovate to make their elementary classroom learning blocks more equitable and engage all students in high levels of learning

Teachers will apply new learning through reflection to make their classrooms and instruction more compatible with how the brain learns best

Teachers will apply principles of the innovator’s mindset to provide students with increased levels of voice and choice in their learning

Teachers will test the effect of using UDL strategies on learning through Action Research within their Class Action Plan

Teachers will apply new learning through developing UDL compatible lessons and routines to support growth

Teachers will reflect on their new learning and how it could improve distance learning experiences
