Young Creators: Making & Coding for elementary and middle school students, Behrendt, Summer 2019

Course Description

Focused on K-8 activities this course provides a hands-on experience with different maker and coding tools that can be used in the classroom.   There will be modules on codeable robots, building in 3d, glue gun art, origami, electronics, holograms and more.  Students will choose the modules that most interest them, work to become proficient using the tools, and then build a classroom activity that utilizes the tool to teach learning targets.

Introduce maker and coding activities that can be used with learning targets to teach proficiencies focused on grades K-8.

Course Objectives:

Students Will:

1. Do hands-on work with different maker and coding activities
2. Create lessons/units to be implemented in the classroom
3. Present on an independent maker/coding activity
   

Required Readings

Digital device required. All digital activities will be compatible with a Chromebook. 

Other Suggested Readings/Texts: None

 Assignments:

1. Complete 5 of the maker/coder modules in-class.  Each module must be accompanied by a lesson plan.
2. Complete independent maker project. Independent project must include video presentation and lesson plan.

Projects:

• Each student will select 5 modules from the in-class list which can be found on the course website.
• Each student will also choose an independent maker/coder project to complete on their own time.

Evaluation:

Each module will have its own proficiency rubric attached.

Grading:

Grading will be done via 1-4 proficiency scale.  For each module, there will be 2 formative check-in spots.  You will be graded both on proficiency in use of the module tool & on the quality of the lesson plan.   There will be a total of 6 graded modules that you will need to complete.
