Castleton will participate in the nationwide celebration of Women’s History Month during the month of March, by featuring an array of on-campus activities, lectures, and films throughout.
Since 1988 Castleton has proudly highlighted the influence of women through the celebration of Women’s History Month. This year, a variety of events from speakers and discussion panels to films and bake sales will capture the theme “Celebrating Women of Character, Courage, and Commitment”.
Kicking off the celebrations will be the annual Equity bake sale, highlighting the average gendered wage gap in the workplace, on Tuesday, March 4 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Campus Center Solarium.
Every Wednesday in the Alumni Room of Huden Dining Hall, the highly anticipated “Every Woman Has a Story” will take place beginning at 12 p.m. Over the course of four weeks, a mix of eight Castleton women will share their personal stories in a 15-20 minute presentation. A meal plan is not required to attend the event and all are encouraged to hear the unique tales of Castleton women.
“What is interesting about Every Woman Has A Story are the different approaches individuals take to their stories,” said Assistant Dean of Campus Life Victoria Angis. “Each one is different and each one is moving in its own way.”
In the Campus Center 1787 Room, Dispute Resolution Expert Cindy Cook will speak on the importance of negotiation skills on Tuesday, March 11 12:30 p.m., while author Laura Gray-Rosendale discusses her recent book, “College Girl” on Tuesday March 15 at 7 p.m.
Additionally, two Women’s History Month events will fulfill Soundings requirements. On Thursday, March 6, a screening and panel discussion on “Girls Rising,” a film clips series of nine girls from different parts of the world, will be held at 12:30 p.m. in the 1787 room.
The following week Professor of Sociology Dr. Linda Olson and Assistant Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies and Sociology Dr. Melinda Mills will host “I Hate These Blurred Lines”: Examining Rape Culture in Print and Popular Music on Thursday, March 13, at 12:30 p.m. in the 1787 Room.
Various other lectures, panels, and discussions will be featured throughout the remainder of the month, as well as the Vermont Women in Higher Education Annual Conference, an all-day event held at the Killington Grand Hotel on Friday, March 21.
