In celebration of Earth Day the Castleton Sustainability Club, along with the Social Issues Club will host a variety of themed activities throughout campus on Tuesday, April 22.
Kicking off the celebrations will be a water awareness relay race. In pairs of three, participants will race through a personally designed obstacle course, simulating true challenges people around the world face when retrieving water.
Prizes will be available for race winners, and the Social Issues Club will donate one Lifestraw, a personal water filter designed to provide safe, clean drinking water, to the Philippines with each volunteer.
Weighing only 54 grams, a Lifestraw can filter more than 1,000 liters of water and removes up to 99.99 percent of waterborne bacteria. The device is BPA free and contains no chemicals, with no batteries or moving parts.
Exhibitors, such as Green Mountain Power, Sodexo and Efficiency Vermont, will be available to discuss sustainability tips and best practices in the Campus Center beginning at 11 a.m., and at 4:30 p.m. the Castleton Roots class will host a Typhoon Relief dinner, featuring a Philippine inspired meal, with all proceeds going towards additional Lifestraws to be donated to the Philippines.
Also running throughout the day is a campus clothing exchange and hula-hoop decorating station, as well as the Castleton Greenhouse open house.
