Honing in on Castleton’s unique emphasis on civic mindedness and community engagement, psychology majors McKenzie Bover, Kelly Mesler and Molly Perkins have openly embraced the theme of civic engagement while filling the needs of the local community. After doing some preliminary research the group found that the campus had a need for a children’s tutoring program and have since devoted their time to fulfilling the project.
The three students designed the tutoring program for the children of Castleton University students, staff, and faculty. This program targets elementary aged kids, but is not limited in age.
Through the program, the students will provide an outlet for other students, staff, and faculty with children to have a safe place for them to stay for several hours while on campus. Another clear advantage of the program is the additional opportunities for student looking for more hours of experience tutoring and educating young children without having to travel off campus.
Still in its early stages, the three girls have already garnered a great amount of interest in the program for the spring semester.
“Civic engagement is important,” said Mesler, “The things I’ve learned from it are immeasurable.”
Similarly, Perkins has already gained a wealth of new knowledge, experiences and connections through the journey, even having just started working towards her civic engagement certificate this year.
“It helps you get more involved and deeper involved on campus,” Perkins said.
