Throughout the summer and carrying into the fall semester, Castleton communication students have been gaining professional experience in their intended fields for course credits through a variety of internships.
Among these students are Kalissa Haff and Ali Mazzolla who established connections outside of the College and crossed state lines to carry out their internship hours. Haff spent her summer working with Mannix Marketing in Glens Falls, NY while Mazzolla joined forces with Corptalk LLC in New Jersey.
From print to various media based opportunities, many students gained valuable experiences with local internships as a result of Castleton’s connections and partnerships in the surrounding communities.
Senior Daley Crowley interned at Vermont Public Television in Burlington and focused on their community outreach segments. From sitting in the control room to venturing out to film for the Vermont Outdoor Journal and starring in a promotional commercial, Crowley said she was introduced to an array of potential career opportunities.
“The internship was exactly what I was looking for,” she said. “I’m still unsure about what part of the communication field I want to go into after graduation, but my time at Vermont PBS allowed me to experience a lot of different aspects.”
Also taking advantage of the many opportunities available in Vermont, Nicole Irwin interned with the Paramount Theater in Rutland, Emmy Hescock worked with the Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity, Molly Howard worked with the Vermont chapter of The American Institute of Graphic Arts, Rebecca Roe interned with the Rutland Herald for newspaper layout and design and Derek Fallon is currently an intern at Rutland Regional Medical Center.
Two students remained on campus for the summer to partake in internships within Castleton offices. In the Marketing and Communications Office Molly DeMellier worked on the launch of Castleton’s new website, while Jorah McKinley worked with Castleton’s Conference and Events Office and played a large role in the success of the summer concert series.
“Communication students develop a considerable set of skills over the years and in an internship they can put those skills to work in a professional setting,” said Chair of the Communication Department and Internship Coordinator Bob Gershon. “It’s often the capstone of their academic career, setting them off on a direct path to being a communication professional.”
