Translated from Spanish to mean “the blind boys from the neighborhood”, Los Ciegos Del Barrio has been performing individually since 1992 but came together as a band in 1997. ‘Discovered’ at the New York School for the Blind, twin brothers Alvin and Derek Suarez, along with cousins Amaldo “Machete” Vargas, Jaime Diaz and bandmate Jimmy Fontanez, are proud representatives of the visually impaired community and have worked with the National Federation of the Blind. Los Ciegos Del Barrio developed an ongoing partnership with Project Troubador, a nonprofit organization that uses live performance to foster cultural exchange and through this connection have brought their brand of high-energy genre-bending musical style to Russia, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic; performing for numerous concert halls, cultural fairs, schools, and private events.
