Taking their learning experience international, this past summer six students and two community members got to experience the musical culture of the Bahamas as they ventured to the America Cantat 8 International Choral Festival at Atlantis Paradise Island Resort. Students participated in two five-day workshops focusing on music from Latin America and the Bahamas. The premier cultural music conference also included workshops on Cuban choral, Junkanoo, and Bahamas folk music.
“Students learned a tremendous amount from each of their workshops about the specific music, and also from participating with singers from all over Latin and Central America,” said Sherrill Blodget, director of choral activities, adding that students were able to witness live performances on a daily basis given by choirs from Argentina, Cuba, Mexico and other countries. “Everyone was there to share music and to learn from each other. It was very exciting, welcoming, and fun.”
The abroad trip allowed for outside of the classroom student learning, which has become a growing tradition for the music department. Each year they regularly attend conferences, and collaborate with various other organizations outside of the University.
While at the conference, the Castleton group made a connection with a professional Cuban choir who would like to collaborate with them in the future. Thanks to these efforts, members of the music department are planning a trip to Cuba for the spring 2017 semester.
“It was a wonderful vibe,” said Blodget of the unique and rewarding experience. “We made and heard some incredible music.”
