Castleton junior Vanessa Robertson has made local history as she was recently elected to the Rutland City Board of Aldermen, becoming the youngest member in history. The 21-year old, double majoring in Political Science and History, plans to add a young female voice to local city government.
“I ran because I wanted more women on the board, to allow people my age to have a voice, and to focus on the economy and infrastructure in Rutland,” said Robertson. “It is an amazing opportunity and I am thrilled to have been elected.”
During her time on the board Robertson hopes to tackle issues such as the local water system, growing business in downtown Rutland and attracting the younger generation to the local area.
“I feel that my education at Castleton has taught me that no matter where you start you can accomplish anything. The support system on campus really helped me throughout the campaign process,” she said.
While at Castleton, Robertson has used her leadership skills to make great strides in various areas where she is passionate. In addition to working several jobs and taking on a full course load, she found time to create the Castleton Political Science Club and has served as a Research Assistant to the Castleton Polling Institute for nearly a year.
“Vanessa is an impressive young woman,” said Professor and Director of the Castleton Polling Institute, Rich Clark. “She has taken President Wolk’s directive to make a difference at Castleton and then make a difference in the world to heart, starting with Rutland before she goes on to bigger and greater challenges, as I expect she will.”
The previous record holder for youngest board member was appointed at the age of 22.
Robertson will officially join the 11-member board on March 21. She hopes that her position will further encourage others of her generation to get more involved in public affairs.
“Both as a Mayor and as a resident of Rutland City, I am delighted that Vanessa Robertson was elected to the board of Alderman. For years, it has been my administration’s stated goal to see young, passionate members of our community become involved in City government,” explained Mayor Chris Louras. “We, seasoned veterans, must set the groundwork and step aside to transition Rutland to a new generation of leaders, and Vanessa’s election dramatically furthers those efforts. I wish her well and am confident that she will be an independent, thoughtful champion for our community’s future.”
