Entering Castleton at a watershed moment for women’s sports, Shelley Lutz made the most of her experience. She earned 14 varsity letters in four different sports before graduating in 1975. Over her career she played field hockey, lacrosse and volleyball, as well as being an accomplished skier. She was inducted into the Castleton Hall of Fame in 1988.
Q: Where are you now?
Lutz: I retired from UPS 2011 after 36 years working in Rutland. I currently do a lot of volunteer work for Rutland Recreation, running a women’s mountain bike clinic and helping with a youth mountain bike program. I am also involved in doing trail work at Pine Hill Park in Rutland. This work involves building new trails and maintenance work on old trails. We have several large volunteer groups come in during the spring and summer that help us with our trail system. I’m also working on opening up an old carriage trail that will run from Pine Hill Park over to Proctor through the woods.
Q: What would you say are some of the top moments from your Castleton career?
Lutz: One memory would have to be learning how to play lacrosse. It was a sport that I had never heard of before I went to Castleton. A second would be skiing well enough one winter to be invited to the National Championships.
Q: Who is the best teammate or coach you had at Castleton?
Lutz: Mary Ellen Evans, my field hockey coach. She was the best coach and mentor anyone could have asked for.
Q: What lasting memories do you have at Castleton that aren’t related to athletics?
Lutz: Cookouts in 402 Morrill Hall.
Q: What advice do you have for current Castleton student-athletes?
Lutz: Enjoy that life!
