Program Eligibility
To apply for Castleton's McNair Scholars Program, students must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher
- Completed 30 credit hours
- Intention to pursue Ph.D. degree upon graduation
- U.S. Citizen or permanent resident
- Ability to satisfy at least one of two requirements:
a. Low-income, as defined by the U.S. Department of Education as well as being a first-generation college student (meaning that neither parent completed a 4-year degree)
OR
b. Identifies as belonging to a group underrepresented in graduate study, as defined by the U.S. Department of Education, e.g. African American, Hispanic-Latino, Native American and Alaskan, Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian.

Faculty Recommendation Form
To produce a complete application, you will need the following materials:
- The basic application with a brief personal statement
- 2 faculty recommendations
- Asking a faculty member for a recommendation does not obligate them to work with you on a summer research project
Program Requirements and Expectations
If chosen to participate in the program, students will be expected to fulfill certain requirements. These include, but are not limited to:
- Participation in Castleton's Summer Research Program
- Monthly group and/or individual meetings with McNair staff
- Attendance of a 1-credit course in the Spring on the topic of Research Methods
- Participation in Castleton's McNair Symposium
