For College Transfer Counselors
This page is for counselors who are assisting transfer students in their search and application processes. Castleton defines these applicants as students who have taken any college credit after high school graduation. Any student who has only received college credit for classes taken before graduating from high school is considered a first-year student.
Welcome! Castleton is a special place. Like many universities, we have outstanding academic programs, state of the art facilities, and a beautiful campus. It is the people of Castleton who set us apart from the others. Our students, faculty and staff together create a vibrant community where every person can make a difference. I invite you to come experience it for yourself by setting up a visit with us in the near future.
As a counselor who assists students with their search, you can appreciate just how stressful it can be for some individuals. Our goal is to alleviate as much of that stress as possible. Your input is extremely valuable to us as we review each applicant for admission. The information we learn from you is significant and often times not evident from just looking at the "numbers". Please contact us at anytime throughout the process. We can work together in the best interest of the student. On behalf of the entire Admissions Office, we look forward to working with you and your students.

Dean of Enrollment
Castleton Admissions reviews each applicant holistically; all application materials submitted are taken into consideration for acceptance. Our transfer counselor, Raphael Okutoro, conducts the initial read on applications from all transfer students, allowing every opportunity to get to know each applicant personally through all facets of their search process. After the initial read, applicants are presented to our Admissions Committee for final decision based on students’ academic and personal achievements.
General Requirements
Students must submit all required materials to be considered for admission. See a list of required materials for transfer students here. Incoming student averages are shared here as a guideline, yet we welcome and admit a broad range of students. We often work with students who are denied admission to plan a path for their future enrollment. We encourage personalized contact in order for us to best assist each student.
Please note: Averages listed here are the minimum requirements to be considered for our Nursing Dept.
- Transfer GPA: 2.5 on a 4.0 un-weighted academic scale. A minimum 2.8 GPA is required to be considered for nursing.
We do not recalculate the GPA of other colleges. High school transcripts are required when a student has 18 or less post-secondary college credits. High school GPA averages 3.0 and is recalculated by Castleton Admissions using completed academic courses only on a 4.0 scale. The majority of high school courses are considered unweighted in recalculation, yet completed college-level coursework, such as AP and IB courses, are weighted. The strength of overall course selection and in-progress coursework is recognized and considered in review.
- SAT/ACT scores: Approximate average SAT = 500 in each section (1000 EBRW +M), ACT = 21 Composite
Scores are required when a student has 18 or less post-secondary college credits. Castleton has no preference in tests taken; all test scores are evaluated, with the best used for review. While ranges are accepted, we prefer applicants have 450+ in each section of the SAT and/or 18+ in each section of the ACT. While tests provide additional information to support an applicant’s academic profile, greater emphasis is placed on transcript coursework.
- Letter of recommendation and the essay allow us to gain a greater understanding of each student’s opportunity for success at Castleton. This letter is valuable to our review. Preferably from a recent professor, letters can come from anyone who can speak of a student's work ethic and character. Essays are an additional way for us to get to know the student, their previous learning experiences, and how Castleton fits into their future goals.
- Decisions: Rolling.
For Spring: Our application review begins in September for admission into the next spring semester and decisions are mailed on a rolling basis.
For Fall: Our application review begins in November for admission into the next fall semester and decisions are mailed on a rolling basis.
Once an application file is complete, a student can expect to receive a decision in 7-10 business days. Decisions are released electronically.
Please note: Some applications may require additional information beyond the general application. These instances include audition for Music review. Nursing applicants may also require additional faculty review time.
