Returning CA Application Process
The Returning Community Advisor Application will be live on Friday, January 8, 2021, at 12 pm. The deadline for completion is Friday, March 5, 2021, at 12 pm.
Mandatory individual interviews for all Returning Community Advisor candidates will take place between Monday, March 8, 2021, and Friday, March 19, 2021. Area Coordinator Rachel Sayward will contact candidates about selecting an interview time and will provide a location and other details at a later date. Candidates should prepare a portfolio of work they have completed during their time as a Community Advisor, with a strong emphasis on the work they have completed during the current academic year.

Requirements for the Community Advisor Position
- Have completed 24 undergraduate credit hours or more
- Must have completed one semester as a full-time student living on campus
- Must have completed at least one semester as a Community Advisor
- Must have a cumulative GPA of no less than 2.3 at the time of applying
- Must maintain a cumulative GPA of no less than 2.3 to continue in the position
- Must maintain a full-time academic course load throughout the semester (at least 12 credits)
Community Advisor Position Description
A Community Advisor contract starts on or about August 8th, 2021 and goes through May 14th, 2022. If a Community Advisor resigns before the end of their employment dates, a letter explaining the circumstances will be kept in the Community Advisor's employment file. All policies regarding residency requirements and breakage fees will apply. A Community Advisor may be rehired upon the recommendation of the Area Coordinator.
Expectations:
- A Community Advisor is expected to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.3. If a Community Advisor's cumulative GPA falls below a 2.3, they will be placed on probation for one semester. If at the end of that semester the Community Advisor's GPA is still below a 2.3, they may be terminated. Additionally, Community Advisors must carry a minimum of 12 credits per semester. Dropping below 12 credits may result in forfeiture of stipend and/or termination from the position.
- A Community Advisor will be placed on their floor/hall as determined by Residence Life and may be reassigned at the discretion of the Office of Residence Life during the academic year.
- A Community Advisor is expected to maintain ongoing communication with their Area Coordinator, other student staff, and the Department of Residence Life.
- A Community Advisor may not accept an internship, student-teach, be a member of the student orientation staff, or be a student officer for Public Safety without prior permission of the Director of Residence Life.
- A Community Advisor must remain in good conduct standing within the University.
- A Community Advisor is expected to act as a positive representative of Residence Life and Castleton University at all times on and off campus.
- Community Advisors are entitled to two weekends away a month. Special weekends (i.e. Family Weekend, special hall events, etc.) require all staff to remain on campus.
- Attendance at CA Training and all other CA meetings.
- A Community Advisor is expected to be available and accessible to residents.
- Community Advisors must respect and maintain the confidentiality of students and staff
- A Community Advisor contract starts on or about Sunday, August 8, 2021 and goes through Saturday, May 14, 2022. If a Community Advisor resigns before the end of their employment dates, a letter explaining the circumstances will be kept in the Community Advisor's employment file. All policies regarding residency requirements and breakage fees will apply. A Community Advisor may be rehired upon the recommendation of the Area Coordinator.
Responsibilities:
- Become acquainted with and build a rapport with each student on their floor.
- Be available and accessible to the students on their floor by spending interaction hours on the floor.
- Within the first week, know all the residents by name on their floor.
- Hold community meetings monthly.
- Identify strengths and weaknesses of students and be aware of major behavior changes in students. Report concerns immediately to their Area Coordinator.
- Consistently confront and encourage personal responsibility on the part of floor members.
- Assist with New Student Orientation.
- Assist in the resolution of roommate and/or suitemate conflicts, personal difficulties and academic concerns.
- Report all emergencies and serious situations to their Area Coordinator immediately.
- Be knowledgeable about emergency and non-emergency protocol and effectively implement when needed.
- Act as a referral agent for students to different campus and community resources.
- Inform residents of campus activities and encourage participation therein.
- Identify student interests and abilities and channel their energies toward projects and organizations in which they can become involved.
- Attend and participate in all staff training and workshop sessions.
- Attend all weekly staff meetings and contribute to the efficient functioning of the hall.
- Help develop a hall staff community, including Custodial staff, Community Advisor staff and the Area Coordinator.
- Participate in the recruitment, selection and training of new staff members.
- Discuss all outside activities (membership in clubs, athletics, etc.) with their Area Coordinator.
- Share duty coverage of one's building with fellow staff members, including both active duty (in office) and passive duty (in building).
- Be available for and participate in the opening and closing of the residence halls.
- Assist with the end of the year closing activities until the day after commencement.
- Be available for special staffing assignment such as Homecoming and Family Weekend, Open Houses, and departmental programming.
- Rotate day/night/weekend duty at the discretion of the Area Coordinator.
- Complete in a timely fashion administrative tasks.
- Report necessary maintenance and health & safety concerns to their Area Coordinator.
- Assist with the room selection and staff selection processes for the coming year.
- Participate in Residence Life functional area work.
- Facilitate effective programming and ensure the existence of community on the floor.
- Develop and facilitate structured programs that meet the expectations of the Residence Life programming model and processes in the CA Manual.
- Assist with all campus programs sponsored by Residence Life.

University Representative
- Demonstrate exemplary behavior at all times by abiding by all Residence Life and Castleton University policies.
- Know, explain, and enforce University and Residence Life policies and appear at disciplinary meetings when requested.
- Provide factual and accurate information in all community complaints within 24 hours of the incident.
- Serve as a liaison for the Residential Life Staff and convey student concerns related to policies.
- Other duties as assigned.
Compensation:
- Billing credit in the amount of Housing costs
- $1,000 stipend per semester with pay increase per year
