Assistant Manager Description
The Lodge is a living-learning opportunity for the Castleton University School of Resort and Hospitality Management student. The Lodge serves as a residence hall and a working laboratory that helps in the overall education and development of the student. Wherever possible, the program seeks to involve students in decisions that affect both the operations of The Lodge and Resort and Hospitality Management (RHM) program.
Student Managers will be commendable examples for their peers and model individual student development. The student managers are very much a part of the management team. Just as the industry manager models positive behavior for employees, the student manager represents a professional work ethic and behavior for her/his peers.
Dual Role of the Student Manager
The student manager position at The Lodge is truly unique. The student manager holds two important overarching roles.
RHM: Operating The Lodge
The student managers implement and monitor best industry practices as determined by the RHM faculty and implemented by the General Manager. These include, but are not limited to property preventive maintenance and repair, sustainability issues, utility monitoring, inventory and ordering systems, food service liaison and monitoring, daily operation of the building, capital improvement decisions.
RHM: Supporting Admissions
The student managers work hand in hand with the RHM Admissions counselor to support activities such as being the student contact for prospective students, hosting prospective families and coordinating open houses. The student managers have a key role in RHM social/ media as well.
Student Life:
The Resident Assistant Student Managers will need to understand and enforce all student life policies as they apply to The Lodge community.
Keepers of the Culture: The close knit nature of The RHM program requires special attention to the day-to-day and long term culture of the students. The student management team plays a key role in planning and executing activities and events. Management and implementation of programming at The Lodge also falls under the student management team’s purview.
General Daily Expectations & “The Many Hats”
As graduates entering the industry, you will be involved in many organizations. The student managers are also expected to wear many hats as part of the team. The student manager is first and foremost a RHM student but also becomes a community builder, an administrator, and team member. Finding the appropriate balance of these roles is crucial to being successful during your tenure.

Specific Duties of the Positions
The Associate Manager:
Reports to Director of RHM and the General Manager of the Lodge. As the “right hand” of The Lodge General Manager, the associate manager will be responsible for quality completion and supervision of those activities assigned by the General Manager.
On an ongoing basis, the Associate Manager will be responsible for:

The three Assistant Managers rotate every term (fall, winter, spring) to work with:
Projects will be developed which not only contribute to the efficient operation of The Lodge, but develop the assistant manager’s managerial skills.
The Assistant Manager Rotations
Building and Facilities Rotation:
Major responsibilities will be to coordinate the work order system, supplies inventory and preventive maintenance of The Lodge. Specific duties:
RHM Admissions Rotation:
Major responsibilities will be to host prospective families and to coordinate open houses. Specific duties:
Food & Beverage Rotation:
Major responsibilities will be to monitor the provision of food service for financial impact and to act as the liaison between the students and the foodservice. Specifically duties:
Events/Culture:
Will be responsible with planning in house events and external events. Will work with or delegate a student to work with SGA in acquire funds needed for Lodge projects or Lodge events. Will be responsible to work with the events class and assist as needed.
Compensation
The Assistant Manager will be assigned to a single room and be paid a room waiver for the academic period employed. Additionally, a stipend of $2,000 will be paid in equal installments through the academic year and with each additional year of employment the stipend will increase by $75. Students electing, or when necessary assigned a roommate will be given a room adjustment of $300 per trimester.
